    Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities

    The Safety Assurance Manager will have a significant role in the implementation, operation, and maintenance of Aireon’s Integrated Management System (AIMS).  Responsibilities include assisting Director Safety in the implementation of safety management procedures in accordance with the Aireon Integrated Management System, developing and maintaining associated documentation, delivering safety management training materials, and performing oversight of all key integrated management system activities including risk and change management, occurrence reporting, safety analysis etc. – all in accordance with international standards and regulations defined by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), and National Supervisory Authorities (NSA). The position will require coordination with such organizations to meet the objective of certifying that Aireon’s services are safe to use, compliant and fit for purpose.


    Additionally, the successful candidate hired for this position will participate in, and perform compliance audits against identified regulations both within Aireon and across our contracted services, encouraging partnerships with international air navigation service providers and other aviation stakeholders to develop collaborative solutions.


    The Safety Assurance Manager will oversee the proper disposition of hazards that may be identified in Aireon’s operation via mandatory and voluntary reporting, proactive analysis stemming from proposed system changes, and/or predictive trend analysis of system operational data. This oversight will include tracking hazards and monitoring associated safety risk mitigation plans to ensure the continued safe provision of Aireon’s ADS-B service around the world.


    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Assist in the execution of all day-to-day safety management activities, to include software safety assurance and the continuous updating of the Aireon Compliance Matrix.
    • Participate in routine hazard analysis and risk assessment activities.
    • When delegated by Director Safety, coordinate with safety oversight organizations e.g. EASA, NSAs.
    • Deliver safety training to Aireon Team personnel when requested.
    • Promote a strong safety culture by example of behavior.
    • Conduct system safety analyses in accordance with EURCONTROL Safety Assessment Methodology and equivalent Aireon system safety processes.
    • Analyze Occurrence, Incident and problem reports to identify potential safety impact.
    • Perform design verification (Preliminary Hazards Analyses, Operational Hazard Analyses, Failure Modes Effects Analysis, Subsystem Hazard Analyses, Software Safety Assurance, and System Safety Assessment) where applicable.
    • Provide oversight of design and test methods to assure compliance with applicable codes & standards and to ensure safety.
    • Communicate findings of the analyses and design verification in authored reports and presentations.

    Experience & Education Requirements / EEO


    • A Bachelor's degree, or professional equivalent experience, in an aviation related field, Aviation Safety Management, Quality management, Systems Engineering or Aeronautical Engineering.
    • Advanced level Aviation Safety Management Systems Qualification or equivalent (e.g. ICAO certification)
    • Recognized Incident/Accident Investigation qualification.
    • Audit techniques course or lead auditor’s qualification.
    • Detailed understanding of SMS components/elements.
    • Knowledgeable of international aviation safety standards (e.g., ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices such as Annex 19 on Safety Management) as well as quality management principles.
    • Practical knowledge and application of FMEA/FMECA techniques.
    • Knowledgeable in international safety related regulations (e.g., European Commission Regulation No 1035/2011).
    • Knowledge of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) / ATO safety management-related regulations, policies, practices, and guidelines (e.g., governing safety orders, ATO Safety Management System (SMS).


    • Software coding knowledge (C++, Java)
    • A basic knowledge of various hazard identification tools (i.e., Bow-Tie, Fault Tree Analysis, Hazard Analysis Worksheet, etc.).
    • Basic Understanding of system Safety and how to apply it.
    • Manual, Safety Risk Management Guidance for System Acquisitions (SRMGSA), Air Traffic Safety Oversight (AOV) Safety Oversight Circulars (SOCs), ATO Safety Guidance (ATO-SG) documents, work instructions, etc.), including their order of precedence.
    • Knowledge of the policy, concepts, principles, theories, and methods related to the ATO Safety Risk Management (SRM) process.
    • Basic Understanding of Risk Management and its importance to safety. Knowledge of the FAA/ATO mission and functions, and how it's social, political, and technological systems work. Basic knowledge of software assurance (i.e. RTCA DO-278A, RTCA DO-178)




    • Minimum of ten years in an aviation environment (ANSP, Airline Operator or NSA).
    • Minimum of five years background in an air traffic management safety program (specifically FAA or other International ANSP), or air traffic surveillance technology area, with practical experience of ADS-B and/or Mode S.
    • Previous experience working in a highly regulated environment for software compliance standards (e.g. medical industry, DOD), a definitive advantage.


    • Software Safety Assurance (e.g. RTCA DO-278A) knowledge.
    • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
